Nine Years in Sydney With a Birthday Discount
To celebrate 9 years in Sydney since starting my leadership studies, I'm sharing my 9 key reflections with a 56% discount on the annual plan. Why this strange percentage and what's included?
G’day - today I’m celebrating my birthday and also 9 years from coming to Sydney to study the Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management.
Little did I know that I would find suitable work with sponsorship visa and a short cut to permanent residency and enjoy staying here.
How to get started in a new place? Just learning about visa rules and applying from overseas? I thought there is a better way by adding a local education program.
I found the Australian Institute of Management (AIM) being the only training provider who also provided assessment of leadership roles for visa purposes on behalf of the government. So I became the most exotic student!
After studying for two month onsite in Sydney and going down under for the lucky job interviews, my wife Alexandra and I finally moved down under in November 2016. That journey led to my dream role at ActiveCampaign!
Here are my key takeaways from living in this magnificent city:
Networking is fun: I met so many interesting people in my first week at the Australian Institute of Management and realised that it is easier than anywhere else to come in contact with others.
Curiosity is about them: In order to move to Australia I needed a sponsorship visa. Instead of telling that to anyone who didn’t want to hear that, I rather showed my interest in them as networking is all about them.
Learning is lifelong: Education in Australia is a critical industry with a lot of regulation to ensure the right in demand skills are covered. I’m grateful for the acceptance of my events and webinars by local professionals.
Sydney is a salad bowl: Many people see the large Australian cities as melting pots where we’re all the same. In my view it’s rather a salad bowl where lettuce, tomato and cucumber taste best mixed together.
Friendship is global: Most people come to Australia as freedom seekers to find another world where everyone seem to arrange themselves and integrate. I made friendship here with locals and people from far away.
Walking is healthy: Living close to work prevented my to buy a car right away - later I recognised the passion in walking around Sydney Harbour. By average I’m walking 7 km per day - and totally forgot to buy a car.
Australia is a test market: New Technologies (except fast internet) or processes are often tested here for easy adoption in English with decent autonomy - great if it works to expand, otherwise doesn’t matter globally.
Sydney is Asia Pacific’s HQ: Many modern Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies moved their APAC head offices from Singapore to Sydney. That was the case for Hootsuite while ActiveCampaign started right here.
Consistency is key: Building regular habits has defined my experience. From weekly LinkedIn posts about Social Selling (episode 337 next week) to webinars and books - improving habits is addictive!
